Halloween is fast approaching and I couldn’t believe it when I nipped in to TK Maxx this week to discover they had already sold out of their pumpkin pasta shapes! (I had all these ideas to make some halloween pasta salads! Ho Hum!) Anyway, as a parent I know it’s easy to get stressed over what to put in lunch boxes and how to keep them fun. So today I’ve come up with 5 easy Halloween Lunchbox Hacks to make your lunch box that more special for this time of year. And these really are quick and easy to do!
5 Easy Halloween Lunchbox Hacks
All you need are:
a bag of halloween party favours, ideally with a spider, some netting to make the spider’s web, a bat, some googly eyes, a rat or two and some scary teeth. I found these in my local Tesco but check out any of the supermarkets near you. All I would say, is dont wait! Do it now! They seem to be very popular and sell out. They might have them in a local Pound shop if you are lucky. Check it out.
For each Halloween lunch box you will need:
- one satsuma
- one carrot
- large chunk of cucumber
- one sandwich thin with filling, here we used crispy bacon and cucumber
- little cake, or in this case, a chocolate crispy crackolate
- Halloween party favours
Halloween Hack #1 – Make a pumpkin out of the satsuma
Peel the satsuma so it’s easy for your little one to eat. Take a small slice of cucumber and push this into the top of the satsuma. It’s like a stalk.
Halloween Hack #2 – Take the carrot and turn it into a pumpkin
I saw this on pinterest and it is a great, quick and easy halloween hack! Peel the carrot. Then make two vertical cuts either side of the length of the carrot to create the start of a stalk. Then make two horizontal cuts to round off the pumpkin shape, and leave you with a stalk. Hope this makes sense. Check out the image…
Halloween Hack #3 – Turn the sandwich into a scary monster
Using the sandwich thin, we filled it with crispy bacon and slices of cucumber first. Obviously you can fill with the filling of your choice. Then carefully cut out a square and wedge the eyeball in. You could use edible bits here but I found these scary eyeballs and thought “perfect for the lunch box.”
Cut up the cucumber into sticks, like jagged hair and place around the top of the head. Cut a hole for the mouth. Wedge in a jagged piece of cucumber (supposed to represent the teeth!)
I don’t think my monster looks that scary really. Better luck next time. But the cherry tomatoes work well for feet and hands!
Halloween Hack #4 – Pop the rat on the crispy crackolate cake
Ideally do this whilst the kids aren’t looking. (It works best if it’s a surprise or it did on mine!) Pop the plastic rat on top of the cake or wedge into the lunch box. At a glance, the kids will think it’s a miniature real one! (HeHe!) Add in the spider or bat if you can find them! The more the merrier!
Halloween Hack #5 – include the scary dracula teeth
The child can then pop the scary dracula teeth in their mouth, so they can scare their friends at lunchtime!
So there you have it! 5 quick and easy and really simple Halloween hacks for your lunch box that 1) won’t cost you a fortune and 2) will make the lunch box that much more fun this Halloween!
