Can you believe it? I am still a little in shock! As Nestle axes Breakaway biscuit, here’s 10 snack ideas for the lunch box to help get you back on track with the lunch box packing regime.
The first I heard was the BBC ringing me for comment as the lunch box expert. What did I think about Nestle axing the Breakaway bar and what alternatives would I suggest go in the lunch box as substitutes … I had to think fast on my feet and quickly came up with some healthier snack options – mini rice cakes, mini gingerbread men or possibly mini jammy dodgers…

In case you missed the shocking announcement, after 54 years, Nestle are axing the Breakaway biscuit bar! The biscuit bar I used to have as a special treat in my lunch box as a child growing up!
Such a sad day it will be.
I have been told the date is set for March 2024, but this all depends on availability in store of the Breakaway bar… And how many of us rush out and buy multiple packs at a time!

The lunch box challenge to hunt down the Breakaway biscuit
So I saw it as a challenge, a lunch box mission if you like, for the lunch box lady (that’s me) to quickly find out which supermarkets still are stocking the Breakaway.
So I had to do the challenge over a couple of days. I leapt in my car and headed off to my local supermarket stores. I had no Breakaway biscuits in the house and knew I had to do a quick video to help you all find either substitutions and alternative snack ideas for the lunch box. Or create a final lunch box video sharing the Breakaway biscuit as a kind of last hoorah!
Please note: The information below is accurate on the date I visited Asda which was 13 February 2024. The situation may already have changed. So if you are looking to eat your last Breakaway, I really suggest you hurry! Hurry on in store and see what you can find. Another suggestion, maybe, is to call the store in advance to save yourself a journey!
Also note I visited my local Tesco, called my Sainsbury local, visited Waitrose and a larger Sainsbury’s and finally Asda. The only store I found stock was in Asda. Please note though, they only had one box on the shelf so I imagine stock is already extremely limited.
I did see on instagram that some followers had found Breakaway in Iceland so be sure to look there too. And other food discounters. Good luck in your search!
What 10 snack ideas could be substituted for the Breakaway biscuit?
But fear not, if this is really the last of the Breakaway biscuit, rest assured that there are alternatives that you can put into the lunch box. These alternatives in my opinion have a similar taste and they might actually work better.
So in the video below I share 10 snack ideas that could replace the Breakaway biscuit. Most of these snack ideas are mini sized, which I see as a huge benefit.
Now if you want to see the 10 snack ideas I have come up with as substitutes for this chocolate sweet treat, then watch the video that’s just uploaded to the Lunchbox World youtube channel.
Why do I love mini snack ideas for the lunch box so much?
Reasons why I love mini sized snacks:
- they help with portion control – you only get so many in a mini bag
- they are perfect for little people with little fingers
- they fit perfectly into the yumbox lunch box – as demonstrated in the video below
- please note though many schools do not allow chocolate in the lunch box, so do check your school policy in advance. Some schools allow chocolate bars on a Friday, or as I say, possibly not at all.
- the mini sizes, I believe, are really FUN!
Don’t forget to have your say and let me know what you think!
