Essential Back To School Lunch Box Tips

September 1, 2013 by caroline

Education ConceptBack to School is never far away and it always creeps up quickly. Every year in fact! So today we’ve pulled together our essential back to school lunch box tips. As we are here to help, hopefully this reminder list will help you get organised, as you get ready for Back To School Lunches  We want to help make this an easier time for you, and to help you prepare for Back to School for this new academic year. Here are our top tips:

1 Have the Essential Kit For Lunch

lunch box – try and get one with a tight seal to keep the lunch fresh, and to avoid any spillages in the lunch bag or school bag. This way (instead of using plastic bags or foil, it’s re-usable and dishwasher safe)

lunch bag – an insulated lunch bag will help keep the lunch cool and safe until you’re ready to eat it
ice pack – to keep lunch extra cool and safe particularly in hot classrooms
drinking bottle – buy a non-leak one such as Sistema – we always found these have worked well and do not leak!

Check out the Lunchbox World YouTube channel for more tips and recommendations as we walk you through some of what I’ve found to be handy kit to have when packing lunches for my kids.

2 Don’t pack more than they can eat

Many schools encourage kids to get outside and play within 15 minutes of lunch starting! So, if like mine, your child might be more of a slow eater, don’t overload them with a huge lunch. Let your child help guide you in how much to pack. Definitely with mine I knew really quickly if it was not enough or too much!!

So keep it bite-sized and don’t overwhelm them, particularly if they’re new to the school. It can be really daunting those first few weeks, whatever their age.

3 Keep the Lunch Healthy

Check the Nutrition section of the website as well as more details here  Nutrition section and the Eatwell plate and aim to give them something from each food group

4 Keep the lunch varied and something they’ll like

The last thing you want is to see their lunch come home uneaten. Check the recipe section for fresh and healthy lunch box ideas

There are loads more lunch box ideas and videos over on the Lunchbox World YouTube channel so do check them out. One of our popular videos is the no bread lunch box ideas – where we use anything but traditional bread. Take a look and let us know what you think!
