School Food Plan Proposes Lunchbox Ban

July 12, 2013 by Caroline Job Leave a Comment

Today the news was released. The School Food plan has been announced. The School Food Plan Proposes Lunchbox Ban. You may remember we attended the meeting up in London and wrote about it here.
What we found shocking however, is that according to the report only 1% of lunch boxes that go into school are considered healthy. So the suggestion of the Leon partners is to simply ban lunchboxes and drive parents to paying for school dinners. Now this is not the first time that this has been suggested by the Leon co-founders. Back in February Henry Dimbleby was quoted in the press, and when I challenged him at the London meeting, his retort was it was just to get a reaction from the media. “It worked didn’t it?” he said with a twinkle in his eye.

Our local primary school has no kitchen nor adequate seating area for the children, so issuing a complete ban is simply not viable.

And what about the children that have allergies or simply don’t like what is being provided in school. Surely it is the parents that know better than anyone what the child will and won’t eat?
Surely help is needed in turning those lunchboxes into something that is healthy or “balanced” as so many prefer it to be called? ie providing lots of suggested lunch box menu’s, planners for the week.
We have some menu planners on the website and some essential lunch box reading here.

At Lunchbox World we will continue to do what we set out to do. We will continue to be that useful resource when packing lunches. We’re here to help put the FUN back into packed lunches and to help keep them balanced.

The aim of the lunch box is still to provide a balanced meal in the middle of the day that will:
keep the kids fuelled until home-time
keep them hydrated
and keep them happy!

So keep your eye on the blog and on our twitter and facebook pages to see lots more lunchbox ideas, lunch box tips and more!
