Starfish – a first in Porto Rafti!

June 3, 2009 by Caroline Job Leave a Comment

The brood crab hunt everyday, sometimes twice a day if they can! Mornings before we stop for lunch, and “quiet time” and then again early evening.

The best time is early evening when the crabs venture out again once the harsh heat of the day moves away as the sun slowly lowers in the sky behind the mountains. It is my favourite time of day. You never know what you will catch and everyone sweems to venture out with renewed energy. Today a local suddenly stood up at the water’s edge with a starfish in one hand and 2 crabs in the other. All the children on the beach huddled around to see his catch at close hand.
It’s a first time for me seeing a live starfish here.

Hermit crabs are another fascination for the brood. Today the score is 45 hermit crabs – ok, they are teenie weenie, but nevertheless hermit crabs; 2 crabs and 1 starfish ( I will include the local’s catch here!) and 15 clam shells without the pearls!

Unfortunately the crabs and fish the brood catch are so tiny, we would need a huge quantity of them to find them filling at lunchtime. So instead, we open tins of sardines, drizzle over lemon juice, salt and pepper and oregano. We serve this with salads, chunks of delicious greek bread, and of course feta cheese drizzled with olive oil, and a sprinkling of oregano and pepper.
Here green salad wilts so fast in the heat, we tend to eat cucumber and tomato salad, or make a quick greek salad – feta, cucumber, tomato, olives, onion, drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper and oregano – delicious! It is making my mouth water right now thinking about it!
