Lunch Box Idea 24 – Ladybirds with MU

May 24, 2012 by Caroline Job Leave a Comment

Today we are up to lunch box idea 24 in our 365 lunch box ideas series. If you’ve been following our blogs, you may have noticed we absolutely adore ladybirds, and when this sandwich idea popped up, we knew we couldn’t resist adding this as the latest lunch box idea!

Celebrating British Wildlife, pop some ladybirds in your lunch box!

I mean, who could resist?

These little ladybirds are made out of lettuce, cherry tomatoes, black olives, chives and cheese, carefully presented on sliced pieces of baguette.

Not only are they ideal for multiple packed lunches, but they make a great centre piece at summer barbecues or parties.

So, if you have little people (or even if you don’t) and fancy making these, here are the ingredients you will need:

The recipe makes 6

  • 1 sliced baguette buttered cut into 6
  • 6 little gem leaves washed
  • Fine grated MU or other cheddar
  • ¼ cut cherry tomatoes
  • 3 black olives cut in ½
  • Chives

Method:

Lay the little gem leaves on a tray and place the bread on top of the lettuce. Top with finely grated cheddar and with ¼ cut cherry tomato to make the body. Garnish with black olive to make the head and use the chives to make the antennas. Use black olive paste to achieve the spots (or you could use black food icing instead).

Carefully arrange on a platter with extra lettuce leaves if necessary.

Our Top Tips:

If transporting in a lunch box, carefully nestle the ladybird on an extra bed of lettuce to avoid it rattling around in the lunch box.

Now if you haven’t heard of MU, the funky new cheddar brand, check out your local Tesco and look out for the cow splat packaging… It’s available as a block of cheese or as slices.

And if you’ve some ideas to share with us, of lunch ideas you make for your little people, do share on our facebook page. Or just comment below. We love hearing your ideas.

So that is our lunch box idea 24 with ladybirds, but what FUN idea would you make up with cheddar cheese?
