Mr and Mrs Magpie – Two For Joy!

April 1, 2009 by Caroline Job Leave a Comment

What a turn up for the books! Today two magpies came to visit.

The sun had just come out again in the garden this afternoon. I was just experiencing that low feeling mid-afternoon, you know the one when the day is speeding away and the time is ever fast approaching for collecting the kids. That feeling of not having done as much as you had hoped… Well, catching that sight (now the clocks have gone forward) gave me the feeling again that Spring is definitely on its way.

You know the old saying, if any of you used to watch Magpie on a kids TV show called Rainbow if I remember correctly? – I am showing my age here!

It used to go:

“One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told

M-a-a-ag- Mag-pie!”

So, two for joy. Great! No need to say “Good morning Mr Magpie, and how’s your wife today”.

That’s what I always say if I see a single magpie. It is bad luck otherwise you see.

So where is my luck, my joy then?
Maybe that will come later. Maybe the children will come home well-behaved, after their long day, or maybe not! …

The other week I managed to catch the visit of Duck and Drake on camera. Before that I missed recording the visit of the lone pheasant. I was too slow to get the camera out. So, now I have the camera at the ready on the side in the kitchen, waiting for that opportune moment! Ha! Ha! I will not be outwhitted by nature!
